Following the polarizing design of its predecessor, the fifth-generation Toyota Crown (S80-S100 series), released in 1974, adopted a strict, conservative, and distinctly formal exterior. Its boxy styling, massive chrome grilles, and straight body lines successfully restored the model's popularity among corporate clients and government fleets. The car continued to utilize a body-on-frame chassis, but engineers introduced four-wheel disc brakes on premium trims and a new 4-speed automatic transmission featuring an overdrive gear.

The engine lineup was dominated by 2.0-liter and 2.6-liter inline-6 engines (later joined by a 2.2-liter unit). In 1978, responding to the global oil crisis, Toyota reintroduced a diesel engine option (a 2.2-liter unit) to the Crown lineup for the first time since the first generation. The fifth generation also pioneered several comfort features, including height-adjustable seats, upgraded audio systems, and sophisticated climate control units.
