Introduced in 1967, the third-generation Toyota Crown (S50 series) featured an entirely new, more restrained and clean design that shifted away from American styling cues toward a European aesthetic. The car maintained its robust body-on-frame construction, but engineers significantly improved sound insulation and vibration dampening, resulting in a quieter and more comfortable cabin. In addition to the sedan, wagon, and commercial pickup, the lineup was expanded to include a stylish two-door hardtop coupe aimed at private buyers.

The engine range consisted of proven 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines (5R series) and inline-6 engines (M series) that provided smooth and powerful acceleration. Equipment levels were elevated, offering features such as power steering, power windows, and air conditioning. The third-generation Crown became a massive success in the Japanese domestic market, further cementing the model's image as a symbol of personal success and prosperity.
