Introduced in 1983, the seventh-generation Toyota Crown (S120 series) represented a significant technological leap forward. While retaining the classic body-on-frame architecture, the chassis was entirely overhauled. For the first time, the model featured independent rear semi-trailing arm suspension (on premium Royal Saloon trims), which drastically improved handling and ride comfort. The exterior design became more angular and aerodynamic, while the two-door coupe was discontinued, its market position taken over by the Toyota Soarer.

Under the hood, the S120 received advanced new powerplants. The centerpiece was the 2.8-liter DOHC 5M-GEU engine, later joined by the renowned 3.0-liter 6M-GE, which delivered excellent performance. Additionally, this generation was the first Crown to offer a supercharged engine option. Equipment levels reached new heights, featuring optional air suspension, seat memory functions, automatic headlights, and an early version of integrated factory navigation.
