The development of the first-generation Toyota Crown (S10) began in 1952, aiming to create a full-fledged passenger car for the domestic market without relying on licensed Western technologies. Debuting in 1955, it featured a body-on-frame construction with independent front suspension and rear leaf springs. Initially, the car was powered by a 1.5-liter Type R gasoline engine producing 48 horsepower, mated to a three-speed manual transmission.

Throughout its production run, the model received several significant updates. In 1958, a more powerful engine was introduced, followed by a 1.9-liter unit and Japan's first passenger car diesel engine in 1960. Alongside the traditional sedan, the lineup included station wagon (Custom) and pickup (Masterline) body styles. The first-generation Crown was a pivotal model for Toyota, proving the company's capability to produce reliable, modern vehicles independently.
