Toyota Crown XI (S170) photos

Introduced in September 1999, the eleventh-generation Toyota Crown (S170 series) was built on an entirely new platform. For the first time, engineers relocated the fuel tank underneath the rear seats, which expanded trunk space and altered the car's proportions, resulting in a shorter front overhang and a longer wheelbase. The model was offered as a traditional sedan (in luxury Royal and sporty Athlete trims) and a station wagon (Crown Estate), the latter remaining in production until 2007. Frameless hardtop versions were discontinued due to stricter safety regulations.

Mechanically, the vehicle represented an evolution of proven technology. The primary engines remained the legendary JZ series (2.5 and 3.0 liters), including a potent turbocharged 1JZ-GTE for the Crown Athlete, producing 280 horsepower. In 2001, Toyota launched the innovative Crown Mild Hybrid—one of the first production mild hybrid systems, utilizing a 3.0-liter direct-injection engine (D-4) and a 42-volt electrical system. This generation laid the groundwork for the integration of advanced modern technologies in the Crown family.
