The thirteenth-generation Toyota Crown (S200 series) debuted in 2008. The exterior design evolved the successful 'Zero Crown' formula but became sharper and more expressive. The body structure was further reinforced, and sound insulation was significantly improved. Traditionally, the model was split into two main lines: the comfort-oriented Royal and the sporty Athlete, which featured stiffer suspension and aggressive aero styling. The major technological breakthrough was the introduction of the Crown Hybrid, featuring a full-fledged hybrid powertrain (THS II).

Gasoline versions were powered by refined V6 engines ranging from 2.5 to 3.5 liters. The hybrid variant combined a 3.5-liter V6 with an electric motor, delivering a combined 345 horsepower and providing V8-like acceleration with the fuel economy of a 2.0-liter engine. The S200 introduced the Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). The car also featured an innovative navigation system integrated with the transmission control to optimize gear shifts based on upcoming GPS route data.
