The second-generation Toyota Crown (S40 series) made its debut in 1962. The vehicle grew significantly in size compared to its predecessor, featuring an extended wheelbase that provided a much more spacious and comfortable interior. The exterior design reflected contemporary American automotive trends, characterized by a flat roofline and extensive use of chrome trim. While retaining a body-on-frame architecture, the suspension system was thoroughly revised to enhance ride comfort and handling.

The primary engine was an updated 1.9-liter 4-cylinder R-series unit. Later in the production cycle, Toyota introduced the first 6-cylinder engine for the Crown—a 2.0-liter M-series powerplant reserved for premium trim levels. Transmission options included both manual gearboxes and the Toyoglide automatic transmission. The second generation solidified the Crown's reputation as a prestigious and reliable vehicle, widely adopted by corporate fleets and private owners alike.
