The 14th-generation Toyota Crown (S210 series), unveiled in late 2012, caused a sensation with its bold and provocative styling. The focal point of the exterior was a massive, intricately shaped front grille stylized to resemble a crown (particularly aggressive on the Athlete trim). This dramatic styling shift was Toyota's attempt to attract a younger demographic. Inside, the cabin featured the modern Toyota Multi-Operation Touch system, utilizing dual touchscreens on the center console (one for navigation and media, the other for climate and vehicle settings).

Technically, the S210 generation heavily emphasized downsizing and hybridization. For the first time, the Crown offered a 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain based on a 2.5-liter engine, which quickly became the most popular choice due to its exceptional fuel economy. Later, in 2015, the aging 2.5-liter V6 engines were replaced by a new 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine (8AR-FTS) producing 235 horsepower, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
