The premiere of the 16th-generation Toyota Crown in 2022 marked a true revolution: the Crown ceased to be solely a Japanese executive sedan and evolved into a global family of vehicles. For the first time in decades, the model officially returned to the US market. The S235 lineup comprises four distinct body styles: a raised Cross-sedan (Crossover), a sporty hatchback-crossover (Sport), a traditional executive Sedan, and a spacious crossover-wagon (Estate/Signia). The Crossover version utilizes the transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive-based TNGA-K platform, while the classic Sedan retains the rear-wheel-drive TNGA-L architecture.

Powertrains are now predominantly hybridized. Options include the traditional THS system with a 2.5-liter engine and a powerful new Hybrid Max system featuring a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission (up to 349 hp). All crossover variants feature all-wheel drive, utilizing a separate electric motor for the rear axle. Uniquely, the Sedan body style is also offered with a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powertrain borrowed from the Toyota Mirai. The sixteenth generation completely reinvented the Crown concept, adapting the legendary nameplate to modern global automotive trends.
