The seventh generation Toyota Corona (T140 series) launched in January 1982, serving as the final rear-wheel-drive generation for the core Corona sedan line. The exterior adopted an athletic wedge profile with a slanted front grille, crisp shoulder creases, and thin window pillars. Offered as a four-door sedan, two-door hardtop coupe, five-door station wagon, and panel van, the interior offered digital gauge options, sports bucket seats, and air conditioning.

A key engineering milestone was the introduction of the first diesel engine to the Corona line—the 1.8-liter 1C four-cylinder (65 hp). Performance trims included the 1800 GT-TR with a 160-hp 3T-GTE turbocharged engine, later replaced by the 2.0-liter 16-valve 3S-GELU producing 160 horsepower. Standard engines included 1.5-liter 5A and 1.8-liter 1S units. Transmissions were five-speed manuals or four-speed automatics. Facelifts in 1983 and 1985 updated front lighting and bumper guards.
