The third generation Toyota Corona (T40/T50 series) introduced in September 1964 became a global breakthrough model for Toyota. Styled with an iconic 'Arrowline' slanted front grille fascia developed in consultation with Italian master designer Battista Farina, the body was manufactured as a four-door sedan, two-door hardtop coupe (Japan's first pillarless hardtop), five-door wagon, five-door hatchback, and pickup. The cabin offered durable fabric upholstery, air conditioning, and radio entertainment.

Powertrains featured reliable four-cylinder engines: 1.2-liter 2P, 1.5-liter 2R (74 hp), and 1.6-liter 4R/12R. The performance 1600GT (RT55) trim featured a 110-horsepower DOHC 9R engine tuned by Yamaha paired with a five-speed manual. Standard transmissions included three- or four-speed manuals and Toyoglide automatics. Facelifts in 1967 and 1968 modernized grille bar aesthetics. The T40 generation became the first Toyota line to surpass one million total units sold worldwide.
