The fifth generation Toyota Corona (T100/T110/T120 series) debuted in August 1973. Engineered with a major emphasis on passive safety and environmental controls, the bodyshell featured reinforced side impact beams and energy-absorbing safety bumpers. Produced as a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, four-door hardtop, and five-door wagon, the cabin debuted an Electro Multimonitor status warning panel, inertia-reel seatbelts, and automatic climate control.

To satisfy strict global tailpipe emission standards, Toyota fitted its TTC (Toyota Total Clean) catalytic technology across all engine variants. Engine choices included 1.6-liter 12R, 1.8-liter 16R, 2.0-liter 18R, and 2.2-liter 20R (97 hp for North America) four-cylinder units. Transmissions were four- or five-speed manual gearboxes or a three-speed automatic. Major mid-cycle updates in 1975 and 1977 introduced rectangular headlights, revised bumpers, and updated interior trim.
