The sixth generation Toyota Corona (T130 series) introduced in September 1978 adopted crisp, angular late-1970s box styling with flat body panels, dual rectangular headlights, and prominent chrome-accented bumpers. Body styles included a four-door sedan, two-door hardtop coupe, five-door liftback, and five-door station wagon. Interior highlights featured ergonomic bucket seats, a digital clock, optional power steering, and upgraded audio entertainment.

Powertrains comprised 1.6-liter 12R-U, 1.8-liter 13T-U, 2.0-liter 18R-E fuel-injected, and 2.4-liter 22R (96 hp for export) four-cylinder gasoline engines. Transmissions included four- and five-speed manuals alongside a new four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Upper trims benefited from four-wheel disc brakes and power-assisted steering. A 1980 mid-cycle update introduced a slanted front grille insert and revised rear taillights.
