The eighth generation Toyota Corona (T150 series, badged Corona FF) debuted in January 1983, representing the line's historic shift to a front-wheel-drive layout with a transversely mounted engine. The aerodynamic body featured smooth rounded surfaces, flush window glazing, and integrated bumpers, achieving a 0.36 drag coefficient. Offered in four-door sedan and five-door liftback body styles, the expanded interior boasted a flat rear floor, versatile folding seats, and automatic climate control.

Powertrains comprised transversely mounted four-cylinder gasoline engines: a 1.5-liter 3A-LU (83 hp), 1.8-liter 1S-iLU (100 hp), and 2.0-liter 2S-ELU delivering 120 horsepower, alongside a 2.0-liter 2C diesel engine (73 hp). Transmissions were five-speed manuals or ECT four-speed automatics. Suspension used front and rear MacPherson struts. A 1985 facelift updated the front grille mesh, headlight optics, and rear light reflector bar.
