The ninth generation Toyota Corona (T170 series) launched in December 1987. The exterior presented a refined aerodynamic profile with narrow headlight clusters and smooth body side surfaces. Produced as a four-door sedan, five-door liftback, and five-door station wagon (Corona Wagon), the interior offered amber-lit instrumentation, full power accessories, automatic climate control, and high-grade fabric seating.

A key mechanical milestone was the introduction of Full-Time 4WD variants featuring a central differential lock. Powertrains comprised 16-valve fuel-injected gasoline engines: 1.5-liter 5A-FE (85–105 hp), 1.8-liter 4S-FE (105–115 hp), 2.0-liter 3S-FE (135 hp), and a high-output 2.0-liter DOHC 3S-GE delivering 155 horsepower, alongside a 2.0-liter 2C diesel (73 hp). Transmissions were five-speed manuals or four-speed automatics. A 1989 facelift refreshed the front grille mesh and rear taillamp optics.
