The seventh-generation Ford F-150 launched in 1980 featuring an all-new frame and redesigned body optimized for weight reduction and aerodynamics. It introduced the Twin-Traction Beam (TTB) independent front suspension for 4x4 models. By 1983, the historic F-100 model was discontinued, making the F-150 the standard base light-duty truck.

Powertrains featured the 4.9L inline-six, 4.2L V8, 5.0L (302 ci) V8, and 5.8L (351 ci) V8. Electronic fuel injection (EFI) arrived on the 5.0L V8 in 1985. Additionally, a 6.9-liter International Harvester diesel V8 joined the heavy-duty engine options. Ford's Blue Oval emblem returned to the center grille in 1982.
