The tenth-generation Ford F-150 (built on the PN96 platform) debuted in early 1996 for the 1997 model year, marking the most radical redesign in F-Series history. Moving to an aerodynamic car-like unibody-inspired front styling with independent front suspension, it split the F-Series line into light-duty F-150 and heavy-duty SuperDuty trucks. It introduced four-door SuperCrew cabs and rear access doors on SuperCabs.

Legacy pushrod engines were replaced by modern Triton overhead-cam powerplants: a 4.2L Essex V6, a 4.6L Modular V8, and a 5.4L Modular V8. The second-generation SVT Lightning (1999–2004) featured a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 delivering up to 380 hp, becoming the fastest production pickup truck of its era.
