Launched in April 1974 during the global oil crisis, the third-generation Corolla (E30) grew larger and heavier to satisfy strict crash safety standards in North America. The exterior design featured bolder lines and integrated energy-absorbing bumpers, while the interior gained improved sound isolation and ergonomic controls. Body variants included two-door and four-door sedans, three-door and five-door station wagons, alongside sporty two-door coupes and three-door liftbacks. The vehicle maintained a traditional rear-wheel-drive layout with refined suspension geometry. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality.

Engine offerings ranged from 1.2-liter four-cylinders to 1.6-liter units. To comply with tightening emissions regulations in Japan and the United States, Toyota introduced its Toyota Total Clean (TTC) catalytic converter and exhaust technology. Mid-cycle updates brought revised model codes E50 and E60 for liftback and coupe variants in 1976. Gearbox options comprised four-speed and five-speed manuals, as well as two-speed and three-speed automatics. By the conclusion of E30 production in 1979, global Corolla sales reached over 5 million units.
