Launched in Japan in August 2000 and globally in 2001–2002, the ninth-generation Corolla (E120) was built on an all-new global platform. Designed at Toyota's ED2 studio in France, the E120 featured a significantly taller roofline and extended wheelbase, maximizing cabin space and ergonomics. Body configurations included four-door sedans, three- and five-door hatchbacks, the Fielder station wagon, and the Corolla Verso MPV. Modern structural safety engineering earned the model high crash test ratings worldwide. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality.

Powertrain selections were dominated by VVT-i gasoline engines: 1.4-liter, 1.6-liter, 1.8-liter (1ZZ-FE), and the high-revving 192-hp 2ZZ-GE in the T-Sport hot hatch. Common-rail D-4D diesel engines (1.4L and 2.0L) were popular in European markets. Transmissions ranged from 5- and 6-speed manuals to 4-speed automatics and automated manual MMT gearboxes. A mid-cycle refresh in 2004 updated front lighting and interior trim. Production of the highly successful E120 range continued until 2007. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies.
