Unveiled in June 1991, the seventh-generation Corolla (E100) was engineered during Japan's bubble economy era, resulting in exceptional build quality, sound insulation, and robust materials. The aerodynamic, curved body was significantly larger than the outgoing generation, pushing the Corolla higher into the compact vehicle segment. Body choices included a four-door sedan, three-door and five-door hatchbacks, five-door station wagon, and a two-door sports coupe (Levin/Trueno). Full-time all-wheel drive was optional. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality.

Engine options included 1.3-liter 4E-FE, 1.5-liter 5A-FE, 1.6-liter 4A-FE, and the 20-valve DOHC 4A-GE featuring VVT variable valve timing producing 160 hp, as well as a 1.8-liter 7A-FE. A 2.0-liter 2C diesel was available for specific markets. Transmissions included five-speed manuals and three- or four-speed automatics. Facelifts in 1993 and 1995 refined lighting and interior equipment. Production ran until 1995 in Japan, earning the E100 an enduring reputation for engineering endurance.
