Toyota Corolla IV (E70) gallery (1979–1983)

The fourth-generation Toyota Corolla (E70), built from 1979 to 1983, was the last generation to use rear-wheel drive across the entire range.

Introduced in March 1979, the E70 retained a conventional front-engine, rear-drive layout with a live rear axle, while gaining a stiffer bodyshell than its predecessor. The body range was unusually broad — two- and four-door sedans, a coupe, a three-door liftback and a wagon that outlived the rest of the range on several markets, where it continued to be sold as the Corolla Wagon well after the sedans were replaced.

Engines were four-cylinder petrol units of 1.3 to 1.8 litres from the 4K, 3A and 2T families, with a 1C diesel offered in Japan. The Levin and Trueno performance variants, powered by the twin-cam 2T-G, established the model as an affordable rear-drive coupe and laid the groundwork for the following AE86. The E70 was also the last step before Toyota moved the Corolla to front-wheel drive with the E80.
