Launching in May 1979, the first-generation Suzuki Alto (SS30V/SS40V chassis series) revolutionized the Japanese automobile industry. Positioned as a low-cost commercial micro-van to bypass heavy Japanese luxury tax structures, the 3-door hatchback featured a minimal unibody structure, leaf-spring rear suspension, and straightforward interior trim. Its extremely affordable pricing made it an immediate sales phenomenon.

Mechanicals featured a 539 cc T5B two-stroke three-cylinder engine delivering 28 hp for the SS30V, while export and passenger variants utilized a 543 cc F5A four-stroke three-cylinder engine (31 hp). Transmission options included a 4-speed manual or a 2-speed automatic. A 1981 mid-lifecycle update introduced rectangular headlights and revised braking systems.
