Unveiled in September 1988, the third-generation Suzuki Alto (CL11V series) featured sharp rectilinear styling, an asymmetric front grille, and specialized variants such as the 'Slide Slim' incorporating a sliding door on the passenger side. In 1990, revisions to Japanese kei-car regulations lengthened the chassis by 100 mm and expanded displacement caps from 550 cc to 660 cc.
Initial 543 cc F5B engines were succeeded by the 657 cc 12-valve F6A three-cylinder engine producing between 36 hp and 64 hp in the turbocharged all-wheel-drive Alto Works RS-R. Transmissions included a 5-speed manual, a 3-speed automatic, and full-time 4WD setups.
