Debuting in July 1998, the V50 series represented the last generation of the compact-class architecture lineage. As global markets fully transitioned to wide-body Camry models, the V50 sedan and Vista Ardeo station wagon were sold exclusively in Japan. The exterior design featured a tall, aerodynamic profile, digital center-mounted instrument cluster, and a flat cabin floor maximizing interior space. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine selections included the 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE, 2.0-liter 3S-FE, and the early direct-injection 2.0-liter 3S-FSE (D4), updated later to the 1AZ-FSE. Drives comprised front-wheel drive and full-time 4WD, mated to 4-speed automatic transmissions. A facelift in 2001 refreshed front lighting and bumpers. V50 production ended in 2003, marking the retirement of the Vista nameplate.
