About this generation

The fourth wide-body Toyota Camry (XV40) launched in 2006 introduced athletic exterior styling, a 277 hp V6 engine, and the first Camry Hybrid. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.

Unveiled in January 2006, the XV40 generation introduced a dramatic shift toward sleek, athletic design with a wheelbase expanded to 2775 mm. Featuring a refined chassis architecture, VSC stability control, and push-button start options, the sedan offered exceptional quietness and ride comfort. Significantly, the XV40 marked the debut of the Camry Hybrid featuring Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine options ranged from a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four-cylinder (167 hp) to a potent 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6 delivering 277 horsepower mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid variant combined a Atkinson-cycle 2.4L engine with an electric motor for 187 total system horsepower. Transmission choices were 5-speed manual, 5- or 6-speed automatics, and e-CVT. A 2009 mid-life update refreshed exterior trim and lighting. Production concluded in 2011. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
