Unveiled in August 1986, the second-generation Camry (V20) introduced rounded aerodynamic styling that softened the sharp lines of the V10. The body choices expanded to include a four-door sedan and a practical five-door station wagon replacing the liftback, alongside a pillarless hardtop variant called the Prominent in Japan. The V20 generation introduced Toyota's All-Trac system, delivering permanent full-time all-wheel drive. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. A 2.0-liter 2C-T turbodiesel was also available. Transmissions included 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic units. A mid-cycle refresh in 1988 modified the front fascia. V20 production ended in 1992, highlighting the start of U.S. domestic assembly in Kentucky.
