Launched in September 2001, the XV30 generation debuted a larger, more imposing body design with a 50 mm longer wheelbase (2720 mm). Toyota discontinued the station wagon variant, focusing production solely on a premium four-door sedan layout. The interior set new class benchmarks with elevated seating position, Optitron instrument gauges, high-grade acoustic dampening, and automatic climate control. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. Under the bonnet, a new 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE inline-four with VVT-i (152–157 hp) replaced the legacy 2.2-liter engine. Upper trims used 3.0-liter 1MZ-FE V6 units, supplemented in 2004 by a 3.3-liter 3MZ-FE V6. Transmissions included a 5-speed manual and 4- or 5-speed automatics. A mid-cycle update in 2004 introduced chrome grille trim, restyled headlights, and 5-speed automatic gearboxes across more trim levels. Production ended in 2006.
