Sixth generation Toyota Mark II (X80 series), introducing sleek aerodynamic body contours and the legendary JZ-series inline-six engines.
The sixth generation Toyota Mark II (X80 series) entered production in August 1988, marking a transition toward smooth, aerodynamic exterior contours. The vehicle was produced in two four-door configurations: a structural pillared sedan and a pillarless hardtop coupe-sedan. Interior luxury reached new heights, offering power-adjustable seating, memory steering column functions, automatic climate control, and an available seven-speaker Super Live Sound system.
The defining technical breakthrough occurred in 1990 with the introduction of Toyota's iconic JZ inline-six engine family. The 2.5 GT Twin Turbo trim received the twin-turbocharged 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE engine rated at the Japanese gentleman's agreement limit of 280 horsepower. Naturally aspirated options included the 2.5-liter 1JZ-GE (180 hp), 3.0-liter 7M-GE (200 hp), 2.0-liter 1G-FE, and a 2.4-liter 2L-T turbodiesel. Transmissions included five-speed manuals and four-speed automatics. The X80 also introduced full-time four-wheel drive (4WD) to the Mark II lineage. A 1990 update refreshed the front grille and taillight assemblies.
