Eighth generation Toyota Mark II (X100 series) showcasing crisp angular lighting, VVT-i engine technology on JZ powertrains, and enhanced safety suites.
The eighth generation Toyota Mark II (X100 series) was introduced in September 1996, returning to crisp, formal shoulder lines and aggressive front-end styling. The design featured narrow angled headlamps, a bold radiator grille, and prominent rear lighting clusters. Built as a four-door sedan with conventional framed doors for increased crash protection, the interior offered high-grade suede and velour fabrics, automatic climate control, up to four airbags, and available Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).
All inline-six engine options were upgraded with Toyota's VVT-i variable valve timing system. The renowned Tourer V performance model transitioned to a single-turbo CT15B setup on its 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE engine, outputting 280 horsepower and an increased 378 Nm of torque, available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Additional powertrains included the 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE (220 hp), 2.5-liter 1JZ-GE (200 hp), 2.0-liter 1G-FE (140–160 hp), 1.8-liter 4S-FE, and a 2.4-liter 2L-TE turbodiesel. A 1998 facelift modernized the front bumper lower intake, grille mesh pattern, and taillamp reflector layout.
