The second generation Toyota Corona Mark II (X20 series) arrived in February 1972 featuring a dramatic shift in styling direction inspired by American automotive trends. The body embraced flowing 'Coke bottle' side contours, a long hood, and a recessed chrome front grille. The line was available as a four-door sedan, a sleek two-door pillarless hardtop coupe, and a practical five-door station wagon. Interior craftsmanship improved significantly, debuting simulated woodgrain dash appliques, deep bucket seats, and integrated air conditioning controls.

A major technical milestone was the introduction of smooth inline-six gasoline engines from Toyota's M-family. The 2.0-liter M-series engines (including fuel-injected M-E variants) supplemented the existing 1.7-liter 6R, 1.8-liter 16R, and 2.0-liter 18R four-cylinder units. Power was delivered to the rear wheels via four- or five-speed manual transmissions or a three-speed automatic. Top-tier trim levels benefited from a semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension layout. A 1974 facelift refreshed the grille inserts and taillight lenses.
