Fourth generation Toyota Mark II (X60 series) introducing angular bodywork, the twincam 1G-GE inline-six engine, and diesel powertrain choices.
The fourth generation Toyota Mark II (X60 series) arrived in October 1980, introducing crisp, angular exterior styling typical of early 1980s automotive design. The body featured clean flat surfaces, thin roof pillars, and sleek rectangular lighting. Offered as a four-door sedan, a four-door hardtop, and a five-door station wagon, the X60 cabin was a showcase of contemporary technology. Upper trim levels featured a fully digital electronic instrument cluster, automatic climate control, and a high-fidelity stereo cassette sound system.
Under the hood, the X60 debuted Toyota's legendary 2.0-liter 24-valve DOHC 1G-GE inline-six engine producing 160 horsepower, alongside the line's first diesel engines—the 2.2-liter L and 2.4-liter 2L units. Standard four-cylinder engines included the 1.8-liter 13T-U and 2.0-liter 21R-U. Power was transmitted via five-speed manual gearboxes or electronically controlled four-speed automatics (ECT). The independent rear suspension was further refined for enhanced ride comfort. A 1982 update refreshed front grille inserts and bumper trim.
