Fifth generation Toyota Mark II (X70 series), achieving iconic JDM status through Twin Turbo inline-six performance and hardtop body styling.
The fifth generation Toyota Mark II (X70 series) launched in August 1984 and quickly became a cultural and sales phenomenon in Japan. The hallmark of the lineup was the four-door hardtop body (GX71 chassis) featuring frameless door glass and a slim C-pillar, offered alongside a conventional sedan and station wagon. Exterior lines were sharp, athletic, and elegantly proportioned. Inside, the cabin boasted rich deep-pile velour upholstery in deep maroon or brown, power-adjustable sport bucket seats, and digital instrument displays.
Mechanical highlights peaked in 1985 with the introduction of the GT Twin Turbo model, powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter 1G-GTE inline-six engine delivering 185 horsepower. Naturally aspirated options included the 1G-GE (160 hp), 1G-E (130 hp), a 1.8-liter 4S-Fi, and a 2.4-liter 2L-T turbodiesel. Transmissions were a five-speed manual or an advanced ECT-S four-speed automatic. Top models featured Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension (TEMS). A 1986 facelift added refined front lighting and integrated fog lamps.
