About this generation

Third generation Toyota Mark II (X30 series) featuring European-inspired styling, independent rear suspension, and electronic fuel injection.

The third generation Toyota Mark II (X30/X40 series) was introduced in December 1976, marking a transition toward cleaner, European-influenced exterior styling. The design featured crisp shoulder lines, a prominent chrome radiator grille, and refined window proportions. In Japan, the 'Corona' prefix was dropped from domestic marketing, formally designating the vehicle simply as the Toyota Mark II. Body variants included a four-door sedan, a four-door pillarless hardtop, a two-door coupe, and a five-door station wagon. Cabin refinement advanced through plush velour seating, improved sound deadening, and automatic climate control.

Engine offerings included 1.8-liter 13T and 2.0-liter 18R four-cylinder units, alongside refined 2.0-liter M-EU and 2.6-liter 4M-EU inline-six engines featuring electronic fuel injection (EFI) producing up to 140 horsepower. Transmissions included four- and five-speed manuals alongside a new four-speed automatic with overdrive. Six-cylinder models featured a semi-trailing arm independent rear suspension for superior high-speed handling stability. A mid-cycle update in 1978 introduced rectangular headlamps and revised bumper guards.
