Unveiled in September 1978, the N30/N40 series represented a major landmark. In January 1979, Toyota introduced the first four-wheel-drive Hilux variant, built with a heavy-duty live front axle on leaf springs derived from Land Cruiser components. Body styles expanded to include versatile bed lengths and the Super Deluxe cab specification. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine offerings featured 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L, and 2.4L 22R petrol engines alongside the brand's first Hilux diesel—a 2.2-liter L-series unit producing 62 horsepower. Gearboxes included 4-speed and 5-speed manuals with dual-range transfer cases for 4WD models. A 1981 update introduced quad rectangular headlamps. Production ran until 1983.
