Unveiled in September 1978, the N30/N40 series represented a major landmark. In January 1979, Toyota introduced the first four-wheel-drive Hilux variant, built with a heavy-duty live front axle on leaf springs derived from Land Cruiser components. Body styles expanded to include versatile bed lengths and the Super Deluxe cab specification. Gearboxes included 4-speed and 5-speed manuals with dual-range transfer cases for 4WD models. A 1981 update introduced quad rectangular headlamps. Production ran until 1983.
