Toyota Hilux II (N20) gallery (1972–1978)

The second generation Toyota Hilux (N20) debuted in 1972, bringing refined interior ergonomics, a 3-speed automatic, and longer bed options. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.

Introduced in May 1972, the N20 series Hilux featured redesigned bodywork with a bolder front grille and enhanced interior trim. Designed to bridge the gap between commercial transport and personal leisure, the cabin delivered improved seating comfort, enhanced soundproofing, and updated dashboard instrumentation. Extended wheelbase models added cargo space for commercial operations. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.

Engine choices featured 1.6-liter 12R, 2.0-liter 18R, and 2.2-liter 20R petrol engines (96 hp) tailored for export markets. The N20 introduced an optional 3-speed automatic transmission alongside 4-speed and 5-speed manual gearboxes. Rear-wheel drive remained standard. Following a 1975 safety and emissions update, N20 production concluded in 1978. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets.
