Toyota Hilux V (N80) gallery (1988–1997)
The fifth generation Toyota Hilux (N80/N90/N100) debuted in 1988 featuring seamless cargo bed pressings and car-like interior refinements. The model achieved widespread global popularity due to its reliability and practicality.
Debuting in September 1988, the fifth-generation Hilux introduced smoother body panel design with integrated cargo bed pressings eliminating external seam welds. Galvanized steel construction improved rust protection, while the cabin gained car-like ergonomics and soundproofing. Cab formats included Single Cab, extended Xtra Cab, and four-door Double Cab. Engineers paid meticulous attention to structural body rigidity, minimizing noise, vibration, and harshness levels while enhancing cabin material quality. The refined chassis architecture delivered excellent ride comfort and predictable handling characteristics across both urban streets and high-speed highways.
Engines featured 1.8L 2Y, 2.4L 22R-E, and 3.0L 3VZ-E V6 petrol engines alongside 2.4L 2L and 2.8L 3L diesels. 4WD models featured Automatic Disconnecting Differentials (ADD). A 1991 update refreshed the front grille to display Toyota's new oval corporate logo. Global production of the N80 generation ran through 1997. High levels of active and passive safety were corroborated by outstanding crash test results and comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Thanks to exceptional mechanical endurance and robust powertrain engineering, this generation earned global acclaim across all major automotive markets. An extensive service network and affordable maintenance costs solidified the vehicle's position as a benchmark in its market segment for years.
