Introduced in early 1986, the fourth generation of the European Ford Escort (Mk4) was a major update of the Mk3 platform. It received a smooth integrated front grille, refined body panel contours, flush bumpers, and an updated interior dashboard. Body variants included three- and five-door hatchbacks, an estate, and a convertible.
Engine offerings were upgraded with fuel-injected CVH engines alongside 1.6L and 1.8L diesel options. Performance trims like the XR3i and RS Turbo gained optional mechanical anti-lock braking systems (SCS). Production of the Mk4 ran until late 1990.
