The North American Ford Escort was launched for the 1981 model year as Ford's first front-wheel-drive compact car built in North America, replacing the Pinto. Shared under the global 'Erika' program, the American variant featured distinct sheet metal, larger bumpers, and a softer suspension tune. Body styles included three- and five-door hatchbacks and a five-door station wagon.

Initial power came from a 1.6-liter CVH inline-four engine, later expanded to 1.9 liters, coupled to manual or three-speed automatic transmissions. A major mid-cycle refresh for 1985.5 brought flush aerodynamic styling and improved fuel injection systems. The Escort became the best-selling car in the United States during the mid-1980s.
