Ford Escort III (Европа) gallery (1980–1986)

The Ford Escort Mk3 is a revolutionary front-wheel-drive hatchback and estate range launched in Europe in 1980.

The third-generation European Escort (codenamed Project Erika) represented a radical departure for the model line, introducing front-wheel drive and transverse engines. Launched in September 1980, the Mk3 featured an aerodynamic two-box hatchback body shell, followed by an estate and a Karmann-built cabriolet in 1983.

The Mk3 introduced the overhead-cam CVH engine family (1.3L and 1.6L) alongside a 1.6L diesel engine. High-performance highlights included the XR3i and the Escort RS Turbo, one of the era's definitive turbocharged hot hatchbacks (132 hp). The model was named European Car of the Year for 1981.
