The European Ford Escort Mk1 was introduced in late 1967 to replace the Ford Anglia. Featuring a distinctive 'dog-bone' front grille and traditional rear-wheel-drive layout, the Mk1 was offered in two- and four-door saloon, three-door estate, and panel van body styles. It rapidly became a runaway commercial success and Britain's best-selling car.

Base models were powered by Kent crossflow inline-four engines ranging from 1.1L to 1.3L. The Escort Mk1 achieved legendary status in motorsport through high-performance derivatives like the Twin Cam, RS1600, and RS2000 powered by Cosworth engines, which dominated international rally championships throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.
