The second-generation North American Ford Escort arrived for the 1991 model year. Developed in close partnership with Mazda, it utilized the Mazda CT20 platform shared with the 323/Protege. This generation introduced a 4-door sedan body style alongside 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks and a 5-door wagon.

Standard power came from a Ford-designed 1.9-liter CVH engine (88 hp), while the sporty Escort GT model featured a Mazda 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve engine producing 127 hp. Known for improved build quality and agile handling, this generation achieved strong sales figures across North America.
