The seventh-generation Cadillac Eldorado was produced for the 1965 and 1966 model years, employing GM's newly designed perimeter frame chassis layout. Exterior styling completely eliminated tailfins in favor of a straight horizontal beltline, vertical stacked headlamps, and a flat rear decklid. Marketed as the Fleetwood Eldorado convertible, it stood as Cadillac's open top flagship model. This generation concluded the original era of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive Eldorado convertible models prior to a historic mechanical redesign that redefined luxury coupes.

Power originated from a 429 cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8 engine developing 340 horsepower at 4,600 rpm, paired with GM's heavy-duty three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic TH400 automatic transmission. Front disc brakes were introduced for the 1966 model year, complemented by variable-ratio power steering. Interior appointments offered soft leather upholstery in bench or bucket seat layouts, power top actuation, power windows, tilt steering, and Comfort Control automatic climate system.
