Cadillac’s Next CT5-V Blackwing May Bring Back the V8 With More Muscle: Report

Cadillac has already said a new CT5 is on the way, and it will continue to use a gasoline-powered setup. Beyond that, the company has stayed quiet, leaving plenty of room for speculation about what the performance lineup could look like.

According to a new report, one of those performance models may be a fresh Blackwing variant. Sources cited by GM Authority claim Cadillac is preparing a second-generation CT5-V Blackwing for the next CT5 family.

What Might Power It

No official specifications have been confirmed, but a supercharged V8 appears to be the most likely candidate. The current CT5-V Blackwing uses a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 rated at 668 horsepower and 659 pound-feet of torque, while the Blackwing F1 Collector Series raises those figures to 685 hp and 673 lb-ft thanks to a revised supercharger.

That special edition could be a hint at where Cadillac is headed next. If a successor does arrive, it is expected to be expensive and highly potent, likely matching or exceeding the current car’s six-figure price tag.

Platform And Production Plans

General Motors is set to assemble the next CT5 at its Lansing Grand River plant in Michigan, the same facility currently handling the CT4 and CT5. The updated sedan is expected to use an evolved version of the Alpha 2 architecture, which should support a wide range of powertrains, including V8s.

GM has also been expanding its V8 development efforts, including a new 6.7-liter engine used in the Corvette lineup. That motor produces 535 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque, and it could provide a foundation for a future supercharged performance unit.

For now, nothing is official, but the idea of a new Blackwing fits neatly with GM’s renewed commitment to V8 power. A high-performance Cadillac sedan with serious output and a manual transmission would be exactly the kind of enthusiast machine fans are hoping to see continue.
