The tenth-generation Cadillac Eldorado was produced from 1979 through 1985 on GM's downsized front-wheel-drive E-body architecture. Shedding over 1,100 pounds of weight and 20 inches of overall length, it maintained cabin room by implementing independent rear suspension. In 1984, a factory-authorized convertible option returned to the lineup, converted by ASC. The top-tier Biarritz edition continued to showcase a brushed stainless steel front roof cap and button-tufted leather seating that delivered unmatched prestige for personal luxury buyers.

Powertrain choices evolved rapidly: initially featuring a 350 cubic-inch (5.7-liter) fuel-injected V8 (170 hp), transitioning to the variable-displacement V8-6-4 in 1981, and settling on the lightweight 4.1-liter HT4100 V8 (135 hp) for 1982–1985. A 5.7-liter Oldsmobile V8 diesel and a 4.1-liter Buick V6 were optional.
