The fifth-generation Cadillac De Ville was manufactured from 1977 to 1984 on GM's re-engineered full-size C-body chassis. Developed during GM's first downsizing era, it was 9.5 inches shorter and nearly 800 pounds lighter than its predecessor while increasing headroom and trunk capacity. Available as a two-door coupe or four-door sedan, a 1980 restyle revised front and rear sheet metal for lower aerodynamic drag. The d'Elegance package continued as the top luxury trim level with custom seating upholstery.

Powertrain evolution was extensive: a 425 cubic-inch (7.0-liter) V8 (180 hp) served from 1977 to 1979, followed by a 368 cubic-inch V8 in 1980 and the variable-displacement V8-6-4 in 1981. From 1982 onward, the aluminum HT4100 4.1-liter V8 (135 hp) became standard, alongside an optional 5.7-liter Oldsmobile V8 diesel. Transmissions included 3-speed and 4-speed overdrive automatics, supported by automatic climate control.
