The fourth-generation Cadillac De Ville was produced from 1971 through 1976 on General Motors' enlarged C-body architecture. Measuring over 230 inches in overall length, it remains one of the largest production passenger cars ever built. Visual updates introduced mandatory energy-absorbing 5-mph bumpers for 1973 and rectangular headlamps for 1975. Offered as the Coupe de Ville and Sedan de Ville, optional d'Elegance packages introduced plush pillow-finish velvet or soft leather interior trim.

Engine options centered on the 472 cubic-inch (7.7-liter) V8 (220 net hp), replaced for 1975–1976 by the giant 500 cubic-inch (8.2-liter) V8 (190–210 net hp). Both engines mated to a heavy-duty TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. Advanced period innovations included optional early driver/passenger airbags (Air Cushion Restraint System) and Trackmaster rear anti-skid brakes, alongside automatic climate control.
