The first standalone generation of the Cadillac De Ville debuted in 1959, when the long-running trim level split off from the Series 62 into a distinct model line. Built on GM's full-size X-frame chassis, it offered two-door hardtop coupe and four-door hardtop sedan body styles (available in 4-window and 6-window roof designs). The 1959 model became legendary for its massive tailfins crowned by dual bullet taillights, while the 1960 model adopted a more understated fin treatment and simplified front bumper styling for a balanced luxury aesthetic.

Power was provided by a 390 cubic-inch (6.4-liter) V8 engine outputting 325 horsepower with a four-barrel Carter carburetor. Drive was directed to the rear axle via a four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Standard De Ville equipment included power steering, power brakes, power windows, power front seat adjustment, and an available Autronic Eye automatic headlight dimmer.
