The eighth-generation Passat transitioned to the MQB platform, won European Car of the Year 2015, and introduced the GTE plug-in hybrid.
The Volkswagen Passat B8 (Typ 3G) launched in mid-2014 and claimed the European Car of the Year title for 2015. Constructed on the MQB platform, it reduced weight by up to 85 kg while extending the wheelbase and expanding boot capacity. Its exterior adopted crisp proportions with headlamps integrated into a broad chrome grille. Body formats encompassed a four-door sedan and Variant/Alltrack estate models.
Engine selections offered 1.4, 1.8, and 2.0 TSI petrol engines up to 280 hp, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels (highlighted by a twin-turbo 240 hp BiTDI), and the Passat GTE plug-in hybrid. Technological features introduced the digital Active Info Display, Head-up Display, and Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving. A 2019 update introduced IQ.Light matrix headlights and MIB3 infotainment.
