The Volkswagen Passat B5 (Typ 3B) launched in 1996 to universal acclaim. Sharing the PL45 platform with the Audi A4 (B5), it returned to longitudinal engine positioning and an advanced four-link aluminum front suspension. Its streamlined silhouette delivered a drag coefficient of Cd 0.27 and featured a fully galvanized body structure. Body styles were sedan and Variant estate.

Engine choices ranged from 1.6 to 2.8-liter V6 gasoline units (including the 1.8 Turbo) to 1.9 and 2.5 V6 TDI diesels. A major 2000 facelift (B5.5 / Typ 3BG) introduced revised chrome styling, projector headlights, and an extraordinary 4.0-liter W8 engine with 4Motion all-wheel drive, boosting total B5 family sales beyond 3.3 million vehicles.
