The first-generation Volkswagen Passat, derived from the Audi 80 and styled by Giugiaro, launched VW's era of modern front-wheel-drive family cars.

The first-generation Volkswagen Passat (B1 / Typ 32) made its debut in May 1973. Its sleek fastback body style was drawn by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. Technical foundations were shared with the Audi 80 (B1), featuring longitudinal front-engine placement and front-wheel drive. Available body formats initially included two-door and four-door fastback sedans/hatchbacks, joined in 1974 by the practical five-door Passat Variant estate.

Engine selections featured four-cylinder gasoline engines ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 liters, producing between 55 and 85 hp. In 1978, a highly fuel-efficient 1.5-liter diesel option borrowed from the Golf joined the lineup. A comprehensive facelift in 1977 added subtle aerodynamic tweaks, updated plastic bumpers, and rectangular front lamps, carrying B1 production past two million units.
